Despite Designers’ Glee, Ben Affleck’s Batman Outfit Is The Worst Ever

I have lived through many of Batman’s incarnations, and I have accepted that the changes in his outfits over the ages are a reflection of the era that Batman is living in at the time.

However, I was shocked by the outfit that Ben Affleck is going to wear for his role as Batman in Batman v Superman. From the neck up the outfit looks good, but from below the neck it is awful. It just clashes with my aesthetic senses.

During the mid 60s series of Batman Adam West wore the classic two tome blue and yellow signature outfit that appeared a little too stretchy and the outfit reminded me of pajamas. However, Adam West’s costume was acceptable and in keeping with the comic book.

When Michael Keaton and Christopher Bale wore their latex padded black on black outfit with taller ears and sharper edges everywhere to accent muscles and abs that did not exist, they looked very savage and macho,  and such major changes in their costumes were easily accepted and reflective of the darkest growing within the characters and the city of Gotham.

Now in the 2016 film of Batman, Ben Affleck is going to wear an outfit that not only looks like dingy potato sacks weaved into pajamas but looks as if it has been weaved together by a bad weaver.   In addition, it looks itchy. Come on! This new look is terrible. Bruce Wayne is a billionaire. Surely he can afford a better outfit than his nighties. Grant it, the outfit does look more pliable for fight scenes than the outfits of the past three decades, but must all that stitch work be so prominent.
I am sorry. I strongly dislike the outfit, and I think the people at Marvel could do better.

What are your thoughts? Should Marvel ditch it and start again?

Jason Momoa is Aquaman, But Will Aquaman Make A Good Movie

Jason Momoa as Aquaman

Today director Zack Snyder tweeted the first official photo of Jason Momoa as Aquaman (The tweet: There is only one true King. #unitetheseven). What “Unite The Seven” means is unknown at this time. Perhaps is signifies the seven best members of the Justice League.  If so, the inclusion of Aquaman is a surprise as this DC Comics character does not have a very good on-screen history. Or the words are a reference to Aquaman’s rule
over the seven seas. If this is the case, it would be interesting to see an Aquaman movie that is independent of the other Justice League members and dealt solely with other underwater dwellers and aqua-villains endangering Aquaman’s rule.

True, Momoa looks awesome and dangerous as the hero of the seas, but will the initial story be strong enough to draw and hold movie goers who would want to see sequels. A possible way that this 2018 film can become a hit is that Aquaman becomes just as ruthless in saving his underwater kingdom as Superman had to become in the 2013 hit movie ‘Man of Steel’.

The character of Aquaman has been described at Aquaman DC’s Database Wiki as the following:

 A · I · G · Q: Forever Evil
Aquaman, also known as Arthur Curry and Orin, is a superhero and the ruler of the seas. As the king of Atlantis and other undersea territories, he technically controls most of the planet. His abilities include super-strength, durability, super-speed, staying underwater indefinitely, and telepathy, which he uses to communicate with sea-life. His aquatic nature means he requires water regularly at the risk of dehydration, although he is perfectly capable of staying on land for extended periods. The Aquaman Family also includes his wife Mera and his side-kicks Aqualad and Aquagirl, along with a number of others, fighting together against villains. He is also a founding member of the Justice League of America. Arthur Joseph Curry was his successor after the original died, and had his own adventures for several years, until Orin was resurrected during Blackest Night and reclaimed his title. Aquaman was created by Mort Weisinger and Paul Norris, first appearing in More Fun Comics #73. (1941)

As stated above Aquaman is scheduled for release in 2018.

What a Sad Sap Thor Makes, And Should We Shed Tears?

For months the writers at Marvel Comics have been hashing around with the idea of a female Thor. Where this gender-bender idea came from is unclear. However, on October 1, 2014, the first issue of Thor as a woman became a reality in Thor (2014-) #1. As a fan of the traditional male persona of Thor, I was not really open to the idea of a woman picking up Thor’s hammer.

Yet after reading the first issue in the new series, I got hooked because something awful happened on the moon that has left Thor unable to pick up Mjolnir and has nearly left the onetime powerful Norse god in tears. Furthermore, wielding a great axe Thor may have been fatally wounded while attempting to fight an old and familiar evil threatening the universe.

The only reassurance that Thor’s inability to pick up Mjolnir is not his fault is that no one appears to be able to do the deed, not even his father Odin who is the king of the Norse Gods.  Well, that is until a mysterious woman comes along and picks up the hammer and is transformed into a female version of Thor after murmuring “There must be a god of thunder”. As expected her appearance was brief and that appearance left me looking forward to the next issue. In addition, because she can walk on the moon without a spacesuit its clear she is not from Earth. One can suppose she is another Asgardian woman. However, I do not think she is Sif. Neither is she Freya, regardless on her desire to continue to rule Asgard.

That’s right. During Odin’s long absence Freya ruled over Asgard as the All Mother. She also feminized the floating kingdom by renaming it Asgardia.  With Odin’s return Freya is understandably reluctant to return control of Asgard/Asgardia over to him. It is clear that the war of the genders has come among the Norse gods.

The second installment of this new adventure of Thor comes out on November 12 2014.
